Community leader Burks dies at 85

NORTH CARROLLTON - Mildred Jane Cain Burks used her resources, even when she was elderly, to improve the quality of life for others.

Mrs. Burks died of cancer Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at her home.

She was 85, and in the past several years, she had started a Boys and Girls Club in the town of North Carrollton.

Collision leaves one dead, two injured

Airport awarded $707,000 grant

Greenwood-Leflore Airport is getting a $707,000 federal grant for facility improvements including its hangar, taxiway and runway.

Word of the grant, part of a $5 million in Federal Aviation Administration funds was announced Wednesday. The improvements will cover improvements at 22 airports from the Delta to the Gulf Coast.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
