STARKVILLE — The Connecticut school shooting tragedy focused the nation’s attention first on U.S. gun-rights policies, but the focus rightly shifted to the problems of mental health and the public’s willingness to see mental-health-treatment funding suffer as a result of a stagnant economy, changing priorities or simple benign neglect.

Massacre restarts gun debate

Death penalty takes too long to carry out

STARKVILLE — As I write this column, it is the 20th anniversary of the murders of Mississippi State University students Jon Steckler and Tiffany Miller on Dec. 11, 1992. The man convicted of killing them remains alive and well and safe in the arms of the taxpayers of Mississippi at Parchman on death row.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
