Carroll County man's death apparently suicide

A board of directors is working on a future for Cotesworth, the home of U.S. Sen. J.Z. George. George is known for his work in Congress to form the U.S. Department of Agriculture. One use of the house and five-acre property will be to showcase how food gets to the table. Supporters of the project hope it will tie into economic development in the area, joining with other towns that connect to U.S. 82.

Cotesworth reception set for Wednesday

CARROLL COUNTY — One of the most well-known historic buildings in Carroll County, Cotesworth, is on its way to becoming a culture heritage center, as a new board holds its first fundraising activity here Wednesday.

The reception will be held at 4:30 p.m. at the home, which is located 2.3 miles north of Carrollton.

Dr. Earl Watkins of the Foundation for the Mid South told the Carroll County School Board his organization wants to assess the district and see if there are areas in which it can lend support, as it has done in Leflore County and Greenwood schools. The foundation receives grant money from numerous private sources, such as the Walton Foundation.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
