National Picnic Week is from Monday until Saturday. Picnic plans can include anything from a delicious meal prepared on the grill to sandwiches served on a red and white checked gingham tablecloth spread under the shade of an oak tree. Food just seems to taste better when served outside, and we seem to want to eat more of it.

Granddaughter’s birthday brings many happy thoughts

Today is my granddaughter’s birthday. Leila Rose is 4 years old. She is the absolute joy of my life. Friends who already were grandparents would tell me that there is nothing in the world like them, but I couldn’t understand exactly what they meant until she arrived.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
