20 years of classroom experience has taught teacher a lot

Today is my last day of summer vacation. Tomorrow morning, bright and early, they will arrive — my nine precious second-graders. This year marks my 20th year to teach everything from second grade to high school. My class this year is the smallest group I have ever had in my classroom.

Teacher preparing for first day of the new school year

The end of July and beginning of August is a very busy time. My birthday is July 31. During this past week, I have been fortunate to have friends and family members invite me to lunch and dinner for celebrations. It also signals the time to look forward to the beginning of the new school year.

Couple’s different tastes in films causes few trips to the theater

I love watching movies. Going to the big screen to see a movie is one of my favorite pastimes. Problem — my better half does not. The last movie we went to see together was “The Help.” Before that, I believe it was “Forrest Gump.” Our son went with us. He was in the fifth grade. He just had his 29th birthday.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
