Old habits die hard — even when the electricity goes out

Recently the electricity has gone off both at home and at school. After reading for a while, I decided to go to the kitchen and do something constructive with my down time. Of course, the first thing I tried to do was turn the kitchen light on. The next thing was to load the washing machine and attempt to wash a load of clothes.

Pillow’s Grandparent’s Day filled with special moments

For the past six years, I have thoroughly enjoyed the title of being a grandmother. Last Friday was my first official grandmother duty. My granddaughter, Leila Rose, is a first-grader at Pillow Academy. Steve and I were invited to Grandparent’s Day and were honored and thrilled to be a part of the day’s festivities.

High school friends catch up with each other at reunion

Last weekend, Steve and I attended my 40-year high school class reunion. We all met at the Crystal Grill in Greenwood for drinks and appetizers followed by our meal. It was great to see old friends, some of whom I had not seen in a very long time. Many of us started kindergarten together and stayed together until we graduated.

Holmes County resident saddened by deaths of nuns

As a lifelong resident of Holmes County, I was deeply saddened by the death of two of Holmes County’s kindest citizens. Sisters Margaret Held and Paula Merrill were brutally murdered in their home in Durant. They attended church in Lexington, where they worked and served the Lord at a clinic there in town.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
