Holiday a time to get together with family, be thankful

The first Thanksgiving was held in 1621 at Plymouth Colony in what is now Massachusetts. Two hundred years later, President Abraham Lincoln declared the third Thursday in November as the Thanksgiving holiday. In 1941, Congress declared it an official holiday.

Approaching holiday season brings back memories

It is difficult to believe, but November is here and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Not a Thanksgiving holiday goes by that I don’t miss my maternal grandmother, Mamaw, more than ever. That was her special holiday. My mama, sister and I would go to her home in the country in West Point on Wednesday and stay through Sunday.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
