Man accused of 12 vehicle break-ins

A Greenville man was arrested Monday and charged with breaking into 12 vehicles in Leflore County early Sunday.

Isiah Derrell Hall, 21, 147 Melton Road, allegedly broke into unlocked vehicles and stole personal belongings near Humphrey Highway in Greenwood and in the Itta Bena area, according to Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks.

Early soybeans suffer damage

Farmers in Leflore County are seeing this year a higher than normal rate of damage to their early harvested soybeans.

High summer temperatures and stink bugs have been factors for crop deterioration this year, but one of the largest problems has come from an unseasonably heavy amount of rain late in the growing season.

Tourism group gets $40K grant

The city of Greenwood could be the next big vacation destination.

The Greenwood Convention and Visitors Bureau has received a $40,000 grant to boost advertising efforts, said Danielle Morgan, executive director of the bureau, at the Greenwood City Council meeting Tuesday.

Hospital plans residency program

Greenwood Leflore Hospital administrators are working to form a graduate medical education residency program in collaboration with other area hospitals.

Jim Jackson, executive director of the hospital, asked members of the hospital board for their support at Tuesday’s meeting, and they approved the signing of a letter of intent.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
