Very few surprises in state primaries

JACKSON - Former Oxford Mayor John Leslie won't get a second chance at the office he held for 24 years. Bookstore owner Richard Howorth beat him Tuesday in the Democratic primary.

Howorth will face Republican incumbent Pat Lamar in the June 5 general election. He had 1,033 votes to Leslie's 623 in unofficial returns.

Jackson police officer arrested for corruption

JACKSON - A Jackson police officer has been arrested on corruption charges, just three months after his sister was found guilty of a similar crime.

Detective Wallace Jones, 38, is charged with accepting a bribe to protect a drug dealer, Police Chief Bracy Coleman said Friday during a news conference.

Ole Miss researcher looks to sound to eradicate fire ants

JACKSON - Peng Lee takes the war on fire ants personally.

The research engineer knows the tiny creatures with a painful bite are a hindrance to agriculture, wildlife and property. He also knows his son nearly died from only three bites from the swarming pests.

"He swelled up like a balloon," Lee said.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
