Utilities customers get shock

Some Greenwood Utilities customers got a big surprise in the mail this week: Bills that appeared to have extra days tacked on during the peak summer usage time.

But most aren’t paying for any more days than normal, according to Larry Griggs, executive vice president of operations for Greenwood Utilities.

An Itta Bena 8-year-old is the proud owner of his very own letter from President Barack Obama.

John Paul Collins Jr. wrote the White House in June after seeing a picture of children in Africa. He wanted to go help them and asked Obama to send him on a trip.

45 new teachers join Greenwood district

The Greenwood Association of Educators is welcoming 45 new teachers to the city school district this year.

A new teacher orientation program will be held Tuesday.

Unlike previous years, there will be no centralized meeting. Instead, small groups of new teachers will gather at different places in the district.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
