City schools preparing for new standards

Mississippi public schools are moving to a national curriculum in the next three years that will give 48 states the same standards, Greenwood Assistant Superintendent Jennifer Wilson told the school board Tuesday.

Tim Caldwell’s train-riding lifestyle came to a temporary halt when he and a friend were arrested in Greenwood Dec. 4. After being released from jail Monday night, he was waiting at the library Tuesday for a car ride from friends to New Orleans. The 21-year-old said he loves the freedom riding freight trains provides and will do it again — but not in Greenwood.

Greenwood: Older, smaller, poorer

Greenwood is getting older, smaller and poorer, according to survey results released Tuesday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The city’s population fell from 18,425 in 2000 to an estimated 16,205 for the five years from 2005 to 2009. That’s a 12 percent fall.

The median age rose from 31.7 to 33.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
