Delta cancer program gets makeover

A program that aims to reduce cancer deaths in the Delta has a new name and a sharper focus on serving Mississippians, a University of Southern Mississippi official says.

The Deep South Network for Cancer Control is now known as the Mississippi Network for Cancer Control.

More than 20 Leflore County candidates have qualified in the first two weeks, and some incumbents already know who their opponents will be.

The qualifying deadline for everyone but legislators is March 1. The legislative qualifying deadline is June 1. Primaries are Aug. 2, and the general election is Nov. 8.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
