Police uncover alleged IRS-Social Security scam

Greenwood police detectives have uncovered a scam that sought to steal more than $50,000 from the Internal Revenue Service by having SSI recipients file false tax returns.

An Indianola man, who claimed to be a preacher, and his wife are suspects in the case, according to Capt. Melvin Andrews.

A 20-year-old man is dead, Greenwood’s first homicide of the year.

Police found Audrey McDonald, 311 Third Ave. N., lying in the street shortly after 11 p.m. Thursday in the 400 block of Flowers Street near Ash Street.

Band director’s plea earns new uniforms

NORTH CARROLLTON — Lane Thompson’s impassioned plea won the day.

The J.Z. George High School band director successfully petitioned the Carroll County school board Thursday night to buy 75 new band uniforms.

The $25,500 cost will be paid from $38,000 budgeted this year for the band, none of which had been spent.

The Greenwood Public School District’s dropout rate improved dramatically in 2010, falling from 39 percent to 22 percent.

The district’s graduation and completion rates also rose, in contrast to the overall trends in Mississippi.
