For the third election in a row, Elmus Stockstill is the Democratic nominee for Leflore County circuit clerk.

Stockstill defeated Larry “Blue” Neal in a runoff Tuesday. Stockstill received 1,166 votes, 57 percent, versus 869, 43 percent, for Neal in unofficial returns.

An Itta Bena man shot and wounded his girlfriend Monday night before fatally shooting himself, Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks said.

Deputies found Tyrone Swinney, 32, 6061 County Road 514, Apt. 8A, Itta Bena, dead in his bedroom with a .25-caliber pistol by his side.

Ratliff filed an election contest Monday, the deadline to do so.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
