LC boys, Elzy girls capture wins

The Leflore County boys and the Amanda Elzy girls basketball teams picked up wins Saturday at Elzy’s gymnasium.
The Tigers had three players score in double figures en route to a 67-27 triumph over the Panthers. Leflore led 25-4 after the first frame, 46-8 at the half and 58-15 after the third period.

Carroll squads knock off IA

Carroll Academy’s girls and boys basketball teams pulled off a sweep of Indianola Academy Monday night in Indianola.
The Lady Rebels picked up a 52-22 win over the Lady Colonels to improve to 7-1 overall. They led 13-5 after one, 28-6 at the half and 43-16 after the third period.

Trio sparks Bulldogs past pesky Hornets

The Greenwood High School boys rebounded from a loss to Gentry Tuesday night with a 54-44 triumph over visiting Greenville High School Thursday night.
The Bulldogs started hot and stayed in control most of the game. They outscored the Hornets 18-7 in the first frame and 20-10 in the second for a 38-17 lead at the half.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
