Nine local teams in title hunt

A total of nine teams — six baseball and three fast-pitch softball — will open play in their respective 2023 Dizzy Dean state tournaments beginning Thursday.
All nine teams are comprised of boys and girls who played in the Greenwood Exchange Club’s baseball and softball leagues this past season.

Award banquets set for July 28-29

Charles Cooley continues to make plans for the 2023 Future Champions Greenwood-Leflore Sports Hall of Fame ceremony and banquet.
Cooley is the director of Future Champions. The event is slated for July 28-29 at the Leflore County Civic Center.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
