MDCC Trojans get season started with Bears

Mississippi Delta Community College will kick off its second season under head coach Tavares Johnson Sr. when it hosts Southwest Mississippi Community College Thursday.
The contest begins at 7 p.m. at Jim Randall Stadium in Moorhead.

Glover, Griggs reap weekly honor

Amanda Elzy quarterback Jevarion Glover put on a show last Friday night in the Panthers’ 25-0 shutout win over Greenville High School.
Glover, a 6-foot-4 junior, threw for 272 yards as he completed 15-of-22 passes for two touchdowns. He also ran for 59 yards on six carries.

Former Valley coach dies

Doug Shanks, who served as Mississippi Valley State’s head baseball coach from 2001 to 2014, died Monday after a battle with cancer. He was 77.
Shanks had been receiving intense chemotherapy in his treatment for cancer.

Panthers, Bulldogs pull off road wins

Amanda Elzy rebounded from its season-opening loss to Leflore County with a 25-0 victory over Greenville High School Friday night in Greenville.
Elzy led 13-0 after the first frame and 19-0 at the half. The Panthers tacked on a score in the fourth quarter.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
