MVSU ladies at home Thursday

The Mississippi Valley State University women’s basketball team will tip off its Southwestern Athletic Conference schedule with a home game against Alabama A&M at 4 p.m. Thursday.
The Devilettes are 1-10 overall after playing a brutal non-conference schedule. They average only 51.7 points per game and allow 91.5 points a contest.

Greenwood girls cruise

The Greenwood High School girls returned after a 10-day break to knock off Yazoo County 46-17 at the Leflore County Holiday Bash Tournament Tuesday at the Andrew McQueen Jr. Civic Center.
The Lady Bulldogs (9-9) led 13-5 after one and 34-6 at the half.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
