The Mississippi Valley State men’s and women’s basketball teams opened Southwestern Athletic Conference play over the weekend against visiting Alabama State at the Harrison HPER Complex.
In the men’s game, the Hornets rallied from a slim 22-21 halftime deficit to edge the Delta Devils 54-51 with a 33-29 advantage in the second half.

The Lady Panthers of Amanda Elzy High School started Region 3-3A play with a 39-32 win over visiting Ruleville Central Tuesday night.
The Lady Panthers, who are 10-7 overall, got 12 points and six rebounds from Dekeriya Hatten, and 10 points and three boards from Kennedy Johnson.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
