Mustangs rally late, seize win at home

Playing with a never-say-die attitude, the Pillow Academy baseball team pulled off a thrilling 9-8 eighth-inning win over visiting Indianola Academy Tuesday night at Louis Coleman Field.
“We never gave up,” said Pillow second-year coach Bruce Branch. “Our kids answered the bell every time we went down.”

Carroll Academy’s baseball team dropped to 1-3 on the season with an 11-4 setback to visiting Washington School Tuesday.
The Generals plated three runs in the first, one each in the third and seventh innings, two in the fourth and four in the sixth. Carroll tallied two in the first and fifth innings.

The Leflore County baseball team opened its season with a 7-2 win over visiting West Bolivar High School Monday in Itta Bena.
D.J. Griffin got the win on the mound as he struck out 12. At the plate, he had a single and scored a run.

Prep Baseball: Mustangs batter North Delta, Rebels earn first win of season

Pillow Academy battered North Delta pitching for 15 hits en route to a 14-4 six-inning win over the Green Wave Saturday in Batesville.
The Mustangs (2-2) tallied two runs each in the first and third frames, one in the second, five in the fifth and four in the sixth. North Delta scored two runs each in the first and fifth innings.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
