The Pillow Academy archery team left J.Z. George High School with a victory over the host school and Winona High School Thursday in North Carrollton.
The Mustangs had a team score of 2,939 points. J.Z. George finished with 2,775 points, and Winona had 2,649 points.

Prep Roundup: Leflore beats Elzy, Pillow falls in final inning

The Leflore County High School baseball team scored four runs in the last two innings to pick up a 12-8 win over Amanda Elzy Wednesday at Elzy’s field.
The Tigers scored two runs in the first, six in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth. Elzy scored all eight of its runs in the second inning.

Lady Panthers start 1-0 in fastpitch softball

The Amanda Elzy girls fastpitch softball team opened its season with a 15-1 victory against visiting West Bolivar High School Tuesday.
Chrissiauna McNelson had a double for the Lady Panthers, who led 5-1 after one, 10-1 after two and 15-1 after three. Arieneisha Hayes, Vera Holmes and Takiyah Prayer had a single each.

The Leflore County High School tennis team pulled off a 5-2 win over O’Bannon High School Monday in Greenville.
In boys singles, Gregory Moore of Leflore defeated Tyler Watson of O’Bannon 8-1. The No. 1 boys doubles team of Javeon Harris and Bravian Askew stopped Julian Henry and Jonathan Champion of O’Bannon 8-0.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
