The first-place trophy handed out to the winner of the Greenwood Country Club Championship may need to be renamed the Alan Ellis Trophy.

Two softball teams still alive in tourneys

The two girls softball teams representing Greenwood have made it to the final four of their respective tournaments at the Dizzy Dean World Series in Southaven.
The 8U team won three straight games Friday and will play at 10:30 a.m. Saturday against the Grenada Youth All-Stars at the Greenbrook Complex in Southaven.

All three teams land in loser’s bracket

The two Greenwood girls softball teams competing in the Dizzy Dean World Series both played two games Thursday.
However, both will have to come out of the loser’s bracket to win a championship.
The 6U boys only played one game and landed in the loser’s bracket.

Three teams from the Greenwood Exchange Club’s baseball and softball leagues are playing in the 2024 Dizzy Dean World Series in Southaven.
One baseball team and two girls fastpitch softball teams are entered in the tournaments, which run from Thursday through Sunday for some age groups.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
