Prep Roundup: Leflore uses hot starts to sweep Winona

The Leflore County girls and boys basketball teams secured wins over visiting Winona High School Monday night at Greenwood’s gym.
The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 15-0 lead by the 2:54 mark of the first quarter and held off Winona 41-35 to improve to 7-5 overall.

Prep Roundup: Lady Mustangs’ 2nd-half surge steals win

The Pillow Academy Lady Mustangs moved to 2-0 in District 1-5A play with a 37-30 win over visiting Starkville Academy Friday night.
The Lady Mustangs trailed 10-5 after the first period and 22-16 at the half. However, a 13-6 run in the third frame gave the home team a 29-28 advantage headed to the fourth.

Greenwood High School’s basketball teams dropped contests to visiting Greenville High School Thursday.
The Bulldogs fell behind early and could never make up the difference in a 60-53 setback to the Hornets. Greenville led 23-17 after one, 30-25 at the half and 43-41 after the third frame.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
