Jury convicts man of rape

A Greenwood man has been convicted and sentenced in the June 2013 rape of an elderly woman in her home in the Buckeye community.

Daniel Rollings, 38, 3004 Twin Lakes Blvd., Apt. 6C, was convicted by a jury Wednesday of forcible rape and burglary following a two-day trial in Leflore County Circuit Court.

Norman Smith asks a question of Mississippi Higher Education Commissioner Hank Bounds during an August meeting of the Greenwood Voters League. Mr. Smith died Wednesday night at a hospital in Jackson. A frequent candidate for public office, Mr. Smith was the first black elected as a Leflore County constable and was remembered as an affable, outspoken and opinionated advocate for the city.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
