Belden’s Joseph Deraney is back to defend his title.

A year after winning the abbreviated Greenwood Country Club Invitational in a sudden-death playoff, the former two-time Canadian Mid-Amateur Championship opens defense of his title Friday with the start of the 73rd annual GCC Invitational golf tournament.

Dogs add Cougars to future football slate

Mississippi State, Mike Leach’s new team, has announced a home-and-home football series with his former squad Washington State. But it’s well down the line.

The series will take place in 2030 and 2031. Mississippi State will host WSU on Aug. 31, 2030, then the Bulldogs will travel to Pullman, Washington, on Aug. 30, 2031.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
