Practicing these habits was seen as a means for people to harness ambitions and work with others to get important things done.

Ho hum about coronavirus

JACKSON — Ho hum (no hyphen) is an exclamation expressing boredom, weariness or contempt, according to Dictionary.com, while ho-hum (with hyphen) is an adjective meaning dull, boring or routine.
Exposing a hyphen for one usage versus another is a pretty ho-hum opening sentence, don’t you think?

The great brainwashed

“They brainwashed my great uncle/Brainwashed my cousin Bob/They even got my grandma/When she was working for the mob,” goes his song Brainwashed, released a year after his death in 2001.

JACKSON — Freedom is a big thing these days. For conservatives it’s often about freedom from government — taxation, regulation, gun control — and from liberal mania. For liberals it’s often about freedom from the rich and powerful –— low wages, discrimination, incarceration — and from conservative oppression.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
