What to do with surplus

JACKSON — The Legislature will have more than $1.5 billion in extra general fund money to spend next year, according to a report in Y’all Politics. That’s a big pot of extra money considering the total general fund budget for the current fiscal year was $6.3 billion.

Anti-poverty strategy is failing

JACKSON — Congress has begun paying more attention to counties whose poverty rates persist at 20% or more over a 30-year period. Forty-three of Mississippi’s 82 counties rate among these “persistent poverty counties,” according to the Congressional Research Service.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
