Mississippi lagging behind in job growth

MERIDIAN — Mississippi did not make CNBC’s top ten among “Top States for Job Creation.”

Texas led the way, creating 237,500 jobs from May 2011 to May 2012. Other top ten states were California, New York, New Jersey, Florida, Michigan, Washington, Virginia, Tennessee and Oklahoma.

PEER’s troubles draw big, fat yawns

MERIDIAN — Ho hum ... 14.26 percent is now the public employer “contribution” rate to the Mississippi retirement system. Cities, counties, schools, colleges, and universities along with state agencies are required to contribute this percentage of payroll to support the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS).

Tuition hikes fuel university spending

MERIDIAN — “The money that the universities are receiving from the state in the way of appropriations for the eight universities is considerably less today than it was in the year 2000,” College Board President Ed Blakeslee told Mississippi Public Broadcasting. “And so we’re having to make that up in tuition.”

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
