Burrus: Baseball truly means more in the SEC

Ole Miss set a Swayze Field record with 12,152 fans eight days ago, eye witnesses to the Rebels’ 9-8 comeback, series-clinching win over LSU.

It was just the second time that Swayze has hosted in excess of 12,000 fans.

The school was 257 fans from setting the record in Game 2 when it drew 11,861 for a 5-2 loss to the Tigers.

Greenwood High School’s Jayon Metcalf, a rising junior wide receiver, hauls in a pass during spring practice last week. The Bulldogs held their eighth practice of the spring on Friday and will close things out Friday with a scrimmage against crosstown rival Amanda Elzy at 6 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.

Spring workouts underway for prep football teams

Greenwood-area public schools brought back out the ol’ pigskin last week.

Greenwood High School, Amanda Elzy, Leflore County and J.Z. George have begun spring football workouts.

Carroll Academy is also in the middle of spring drills. CA coach Bo Milton said he isn’t sure if the Rebels will hold a scrimmage this spring.

Ole Miss wide receiver A.J. Brown, who will be a junior in the fall, could very well be the first wide receiver taken in the 2019 NFL draft, which will again be full of players from the SEC.

Burrus: Don’t look for SEC dominance in NFL draft to end soon

The Southeastern Conference still reins supreme in the first round of the NFL draft.

For the seventh time in eight years, the SEC led all conferences with the most selections in the first round. The 10 players taken last Thursday easily outpaced the ACC, which finished second with six.

Mustangs ousted from the playoffs by Lamar

Pillow Academy was swept out of the playoffs Thursday, but the Mustangs didn’t go down without a fight.

Pillow led 4-0 and 5-3 at different times, but Lamar School pulled out a 7-5 comeback victory in Meridian to claim the best-of-three first-round series 2-0. Lamar won 12-3 Tuesday at PA.
