The 34-year-old Hattiesburg golfer scorched Greenwood Country Club with a 10-under-par 60 Friday in the first round of the GCC Invitational.

Joel Myrick will have to navigate his way past a group of talented golfers if he is going to successfully defend his title.

The 34-year-old from Hattiesburg won the 2017 Greenwood Country Club Invitational after he carded a 3-under-par 69 to finish 12 under, four shots ahead of two-time champion Alan Ellis of Greenwood.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
