Prep football season is just about here

The start of the high school football is less than one week away.

While some teams around the state open up Thursday, all of the Greenwood-area teams kick off on Friday. That action will be highlighted by a cross-county rivalry — Leflore County at Greenwood. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.

New Valley coach inherits tough 2018 schedule

Vincent Dancy has a tough job of ahead of him if he is to build a winning program at Mississipi Valley State.

Will Tiger win another major?

The numbers are in, and the numbers don’t lie: The Tiger Woods Effect is very, very real.

The final round of the British Open posted an overnight rating of 5.0. That number ties Woods’ 2006 win at Royal Liverpool for the highest British Open final round rating since Woods completed his career Grand Slam at St. Andrews in 2000.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
