Mississippi State arrived at No. 18 in the Associated Press preseason Top 25 released on Monday morning.

The Bulldogs also ranked 18th in the USA Today preseason coaches poll released earlier this month.

Dogs continue to own Tigers

Led by a dominating defensive effort, Greenwood High School opened the 2018 season with a 44-0 rout of Leflore County Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.

“I thought we looked decent for the first game, but we’ve got some work to do. We’ve got to be more disciplined and correct some mistakes,” GHS head coach Clinton Gatewood said.

Pillow Academy quarterback Shane Houston Stephens runs as he is pursued by the Indianola Academy defense, including Woods Toler (25), Friday night in the season opener for both teams. Stephens led his team in rushing with 53 yards and added 174 through the air.

Colonels run all over PA

Indianola Academy dominated in the trenches to keep their winning ways going against Pillow Academy.

The Colonels racked up 259 rushing yards and churned out 22 first downs en route to a 33-12 win Friday night before an overflow crowd at Bill Davis Field. It’s the fourth straight win in this rivalry that was renewed in 2013.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
