Pannell clinging to one-shot lead

Greenwood’s Steve Pannell came out of nowhere Friday to grab the first-round lead at the 72nd annual Greenwood Country Club Invitational.

Pannell, a senior at Ole Miss, posted a 7-under-par 65 for a one-shot lead. He had a birdie-par-eagle finish to record his best round ever on his home course.

They will be here for the 71st Greenwood Country Club Invitational, one of the oldest three-day golf tournaments in Mississippi. The event starts Friday and concludes Sunday.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
