Widow of man acquitted in Till’s death dies

OCEAN SPRINGS — Mary Juanita Milam, whose late husband was one two men acquitted in the death of teenager Emmett Till, has died in Ocean Springs. She was 87.

She died Jan. 14. Funeral services were Jan. 18 at the Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford O’Keefe Funeral Home.

Lawmakers gearing up for budget work

JACKSON — Mississippi lawmakers are working on early versions of budget bills, and final negotiations are weeks away.

They’re deciding how to spend tax dollars during fiscal 2015, which starts July 1.

The Joint Legislative Budget Committee proposes $5.9 billion in state spending, while Gov. Phil Bryant proposes $6.1 billion.

Crop values down in 2013

DES MOINES, Iowa — The value of U.S. crops fell 9.8 percent last year as prices declined for major crops, including corn and soybeans, from 2012’s record high levels, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its annual estimate.
