Oxford may toughen its parking fines

OXFORD — Aldermen plan to vote Aug. 20 on a proposal to stiffen parking fines in the downtown area.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reported officials are concerned that the current minimal fines will have little impact on thousands of extra drivers expected in town for University of Mississippi athletic events.

2 face charges in Jackson shooting

JACKSON — Two suspects face charges in a shooting that left one person dead and another injured on Tuesday.

Hinds County deputies tell WLBT that 27-year-old Lashaun Taylor and a 17-year-old surrendered on Wednesday and were turned over to Jackson police.

Trial in roadside shootings continued

SARDIS — The capital murder trial of James D. Willie, 29, accused of killing two people along North Mississippi highways last year, has been continued until next year.

The Commercial Appeal reports Willie was set to stand trial Monday in Panola County for the May 8 shooting death of Thomas K. Schlender.
