Barbour defends power plant

Ex-senator Thames dies

JACKSON — Former state Sen. Billy Thames died Tuesday of complications from surgery for colon cancer. He was 69.

Thames’ wife, Ann, said he died at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Funeral arrangements were incomplete.

Furniture company will lay off 1,451 in Mississippi

JACKSON — Financially troubled Furniture Brands International is laying off 1,451 workers in northeast Mississippi after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The St. Louis furniture company designs, manufactures and markets furniture under a variety of notable brand names, including Broyhill and Thomasville.
