State's community college rolls dip again

JACKSON — Enrollment has fallen at Mississippi’s 15 community colleges for the third year in a row, according to preliminary figures reported by the Community College Board.

The new data show that the number of students enrolled at the state’s two-year schools fell 4.3 percent this fall to 77,661.

Miss. jobless rate dips as labor force shrinks

JACKSON — Mississippi’s unemployment rate ticked down to 8.5 percent in August as workers kept leaking out of the labor force.

A separate survey showed state employer payrolls fell slightly.

Both sets of figures — adjusted to cancel out normal seasonal changes — were released today by the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Dept. of Revenue seeks 66% budget increase

JACKSON — The Mississippi Department of Revenue is requesting a 66 percent budget increase for the coming year, as its top official told lawmakers on Thursday that the investment would lead to more efficient tax collections, including pursuit of overdue payments.
