Teen arrested in motel slaying of bass fisherman

JACKSON — Jackson police have arrested a teenager in the slaying of 56-year-old bass fisherman James “Jimmy” Johnson on Sunday at a local motel.

Police say in a news release today that the 17-year-old was arrested Tuesday and charged with capital murder. The teenager is being held in jail pending an initial court appearance.

Raises proposed for some in Jackson schools

JACKSON — Jackson Public Schools is looking at salary increases for non-teaching positions, from food staff to bus drivers, in effort to be fair to employees.

A study done by John W. Jordan, a senior consultant with Core Learning LLC, aims to create two fair-pay scales for district employees and eliminate current pay scales.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
