Killen rehearing denied by court

JACKSON — The U.S. Supreme Court has denied a rehearing request from Edgar Ray Killen, convicted in 2005 for the 1964 slayings of three civil rights workers in Mississippi.

The justices issued the order today without comment.

Former Vaiden chief gets probation

VAIDEN — Former Vaiden Police Chief Allen Vance has been sentenced to three months’ probation after pleading guilty to arson.

Vance, who also worked as a part-time police officer in Grenada, entered the plea this past week in Grenada County Circuit Court.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
