JACKSON - The Senate voted 24-20 Tuesday against a proposal from Sen. Scottie Cuevas, D-Pass Christian, that constables replace school attendance counselors.

Senate OKs Medicaid bailout

JACKSON - The House and Senate are in general agreement on a plan to use tobacco settlement money and a series of cost-saving proposals to reduce a looming Medicaid deficit.

The Senate passed its version of the Medicaid bailout bill Tuesday 33-15. The House passed its bill Feb. 1. The two houses must now reconcile the differences.

JACKSON - The Senate version of a Medicaid bailout bill restores about $3.5 million in program reductions passed by the House.

Medicaid director Rica Lewis Payton told committee members Monday that changes to the cost-savings in the House bill will run higher.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
