JACKSON - A statewide referendum on a new Mississippi flag may be the gauge, many believe, of how far the state has come in soothing its racial divides.
Others see it as a call to arms to preserve a Southern heritage steeped in the ghosts of antebellum mansions, women in hoop skirts and young men riding off to war against the North.
