New Summit relocation plans are progressing

New Summit School received approval from the Planning Commission this week to present plans for the school's relocation and expansion to the City Council.

Dr. Nancy Boyll, executive director for New Summit Schools in both Jackson and Greenwood, said they received full support from the commission.

Home Replacement Program deadline extended

The deadline for applying for a new home under the Home Replacement Program in Leflore County has been extended until Friday, said Larry "Kite" Johnson, District 5 supervisor.

Residents with homes in disrepair may get applications from the chancery clerk's office or their local supervisor.

Lacy a winner at Boys Club

The Boys Club of Leflore County named sixth-grader Deandre Lacy the Youth of the Year 2006 on Saturday and awarded him a bike donated by JCPenney.

Club executive director George Lampley said Lacy is gifted in academics, the arts and athletics.

"He has all the traits of someone who could be successful," Lampley said.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
