Dr. Lester C. Newman, president of Mississippi Valley State University, withdrew his name Saturday from consideration for the presidency of Southern University in Baton Rouge, La.
Newman's departure left two candidates, Ralph Slaughter and A. Toy Caldwell-Colbert, competing for the office, which has been open since July.
