Developer to meet with residents

The developer of a proposed 65-home subdivision planned for a soybean field near Whittington Park will meet with residents of Ward 4 Thursday to discuss the project's impact on their community.

The meeting will be at 6 p.m. at the Youth Center on Henry Street.

Lawsuit filed

A Greenwood pastor and her two daughters have filed a $10 million lawsuit in Leflore County Circuit Court against 14 defendants, including the city of Greenwood, over an alleged assault involving the sons of Mayor Sheriel Perkins.

Murder charged in drive-by

A Greenwood man has been arrested and charged with murder in the Sunday afternoon shooting of a man on Main Street, a Greenwood police official said.

Morrisro Devar Fedrick, 20, of 1315 Roosevelt Ave., remained in Leflore County Jail this morning awaiting a bond hearing, according to Deputy Police Chief Huntley Nevels.

Local news matters to Greenwood. It keeps the people informed and connected. It asks the questions they want answered. It elevates what’s good, and it exposes what’s not.

To do that work well takes skilled reporters and editors, as many as a community can support through advertising, subscriptions and philanthropy.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
