NORTH CARROLLTON — When I met Haley Barbour, he was running for governor for the first time in 2003. It was at the Black Hawk political rally here in Carroll County.

I have to give him credit. He is good at one- on-one politics. I believe that he is as much at ease whether at a rural political rally or a corporate boardroom.

Hometown folks know

NORTH CARROLLTON — Brenda Wood, who is the chairwoman of the Carroll County Republican Party here, has personally known Newt Gingrich since the 1980s. She watched the interview on “ABC News Nightline” with Gingrich’s ex-wife. She still holds a high regard for Gingrich today.

Neal served Carroll County well

NORTH CARROLLTON — Wilton Neal recently completed his ninth term as Carroll County’s tax assessor and collector, bringing a 36-year career as a countywide official to an end. Neal, elected in 1975 at the age of 24, held a continuing span as an elected official without a single defeat.

The Greenwood Commonwealth expanded its newsroom in 2025 by adding Gerard Edic as a reporter covering public safety and other stories of interest to the community.

His position is partially funded by a two-year grant from Report for America, a national nonprofit. Generous supporters in the community donated the matching funds in the first year. We are now raising funds for Year 2.
