Juniors at Amanda Elzy High School and Greenwood High School scored higher on average on their ACT tests than they scored last year, according to a report released by the Mississippi Department of Education.
The report lists scores from J.Z. George, Amanda Elzy High School, Greenwood High School and Leflore County High School.
Throughout the state, students scored an average of 17.3, an increase of 0.1 point.
Elzy’s average score went up from 14.4 to 15.4, with the number of tested students also increasing from 76 to 88.
Greenwood saw a slightly bigger increase in scores. In 2021, students scored an average 14.4, but in 2022, this increased to 15.5. However, the increase was also marked by a decline in tested students who could contribute to the average. In 2021, 117 students were tested; only 106 were in 2022.
J.Z. George’s average score declined by 0.9 point from last year, with students this year averaging 15. However, the number of students testing increased by 13, and the average stayed relatively the same.
Leflore County High School students decreased by almost a full point from 2021, scoring an average 14.8 this year, but the amount of students tested also increased by 21.
Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District’s superintendent, James Johnson-Waldington, said he is excited about those scores that did improve. “We’re just going to build on that,” he said.
So far, the district has implemented ACT preparation classes for 10th and 11th graders and is set to implement ACT JumpStart courses for 10th, 11th and 12th graders in the spring term, Johnson-Waldington said.
“Our teachers are very excited about it,” he added, “We’re hoping this true focus on ACT is going to help us raise ACT scores.”
