The Greenwood High boys basketball team exploded for 26 points in the fourth quarter to seal its first Region 3-4A win of the season, 70-57, against visiting Senatobia on Friday night.
JT Lawrence led the Bulldogs (10-6, 1-2) with 21 points while Javeon Smith poured in 16 and Demarion Meeks had 14. GHS rallied from a halftime deficit to take a 44-42 edge entering the final frame. Lawrence, Smith and Meeks each made big plays down the stretch to close out the victory.
In the girls matchup, the Lady Bulldogs suffered a 41-40 loss to Senatobia.
Alexus Taylor led GHS with 15 points. Janaya Scott scored eight points and Shiloh Hatch had seven for the Lady Bulldogs (5-11, 1-2).
GHS visits Clarksdale on Tuesday.
- J.Z. George: The Eupora Lady Eagles spoiled the Lady Jaguars’ Region 2-2A opener with a 51-31 win Friday night in Eupora.
Eupora raced out to a 15-1 lead after the first frame and stayed in front by 11 at 23-12 by halftime. J.Z. George held a slim 14-12 scoring advantage in the third to only trail 35-26 headed to the fourth period.
Aaniyah Williams led the Lady Jags (4-11, 0-1) with 12 points. Natijah Basin tacked on seven points, and Jacqueline Stansbury had five points.
J.Z. George hosts Calhoun City Tuesday.
- Pillow Academy: The Mustangs dropped a 64-48 District 1-5A decision at Heritage Academy Thursday night in Columbus.
Heritage led 10-8 after one, 27-16 at the half and 49-35 after the third period.
Nelson Hodges had 19 points as he made 13-of-19 from the free-throw line for the Mustangs (6-15, 2-5).
Drew Lamb tacked on 12 points, and Ryan Noles had eight.
In the junior high boys game, Heritage won 45-29. Davis Swain had seven points for Pillow (5-10, 1-6).
Pillow entertains Washington Tuesday.
- Delta Streets Academy: The Lions picked up a 46-27 District 3-3A win over Benton Thursday to improve to 6-14 overall and 4-4 in league play.
DSA led 13-4 after one, 30-10 at the half and 36-19 after the third frame.
AJ McGhee and Kamron Hunt led the Lions with 12 points each.
DSA, which played at Heritage Friday, hosts Manchester Tuesday.
