A thrilling Region 3-4A showdown between Greenwood High and Gentry culminated in a disappointing finish for the Bulldogs on Friday night.
After piecing together a fourth-quarter rally to force overtime in front of a sell-out crowd, GHS ran out of gas down the stretch in a 60-55 loss to the Rams.
Labrodrick Gooch led the Bulldogs (10-8, 1-4) with 18 points, including a pair of clutch 3-pointers to help tie the game late before a controversial sequence ended regulation.
It looked as if the Bulldogs had held strong for a defensive stand in the final seconds, but upon further review, referees gave the Rams a pair of free throws on a shooting foul with just over one second left. Incensed by the call, the GHS coaching staff received a technical during the ensuing argument, gifting Gentry an extra game-winning shot attempt from the charity stripe.
Maybe it was the basketball gods intervening, or perhaps it was just the raucous Bulldog fan base, but the Rams missed all three free throws to set up overtime.
