Pillow Academy dropped the first game of a doubleheader against Heritage Academy by a score of 12-10 at Coleman Field in Utroska Park Friday.
The Mustangs had runners at first and second with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. A line drive to right field was caught, and the runner at second was doubled up to end the game.
Heritage scored three runs each in the first and fourth innings and two runs each in the second, sixth and seventh frames. Pillow plated three in the third, five in the fourth and one run apiece in the fifth and seventh innings.
Dayne Sanford, the second PA pitcher, took the loss. Sanford (1-2) went three innings, allowing four runs on no hits, walking two and fanning two. Brock Makamson worked the first four innings, yielding eight runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out one.
Sanford led the Mustangs at the plate with a single, double and two RBIs. Nelson Hodges had two singles and scored twice, and JC Garrard had a single, RBI and scored a pair of runs. Makamson and Drew Lamb had a base hit and two RBIs each, and Trace Schmitz had a single and RBI.
Chamberlain McClain had a double, and Britt Reichle had a single and scored three runs. Perry Smith tacked on a single.
In Thursday’s game in Columbus, the Patriots led 5-1 after three innings as they picked up a 6-2 win to take Game 1 of the series.
Heritage scored two in the first, three in the third and one in the sixth. Pillow plated one run each in the first and fourth innings.
Lamb (0-5) took the loss as he went five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out six. John Heston Powers worked one inning, giving up one run on one hit.
Sanford had a single, RBI and scored a run, and Garrard had a single and scored one run. Makamson had a single.
Pillow (6-9 overall, 0-2 in District 1-5A) and Heritage played a third game late Friday night. The Mustangs entertain Starkville Academy Tuesday at 6 p.m.
- Humphreys County 19, Amanda Elzy 17 — The visiting Cowboys took a Region 3-3A contest from the Panthers Friday at Elzy’s field.
Humphreys scored four runs each in the first and second innings, five in the third, two in the fourth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Elzy tallied two runs each in the first, third and fifth innings, three each in the second and seventh, one in the fourth, and four in the sixth.
Andrew Moore took the loss on the mound. He went all seven innings, allowing 19 runs, walking six and fanning six.
Sam Bolden, a seventh grader, had three singles for the Panthers (1-5 overall, 0-3 in Region 3). TJ Randle had a single and three-run triple, and Martez Lott, Detrick Munford and Keheim Outlaw had two singles each. Cody Randle, EJ Ware, Dezay Smith and Moore had a single apiece.
Elzy plays host to Ruleville Tuesday.
- Gentry 16, Greenwood 5 — The Rams blew open a tight game with a nine-run third inning Friday at Whittington Park.
Gentry scored three in the first, one in the second and three in the fourth. Greenwood (1-1) scored two in the first and three in the fourth.
Tennill Cannon took the loss as he went all four innings, fanning six. Kaleb Cotton had the Bulldogs only hit.
Greenwood hosts Yazoo City Tuesday.
- Simmons 17, Leflore County 3 — The Tigers could only muster one base hit in a lopsided loss to the Blue Devils Thursday in Itta Bena.
Simmons tallied three runs each in the first, second, fourth and fifth frames, and five in the third. Leflore scored two in the first and one in the third.
Dekari Johnson had a single, scored one run and stole two bases. Dequarionne Jones had an RBI on a groundout.
Kamari Buck took the loss as he went the first two innings, allowing six runs. Zaybian Mitchell went the final three innings, yielding 11 runs.
Leflore played at Bruce Friday.
- J.Z. George loses two — The Jaguars fell to 0-4 in Region 2-2A play with a pair of losses to the Wildcats the last two days.
The Wildcats outscored the Jaguars 32-0 in the two games, winning 18-0 Friday in North Carrollton and 14-0 Thursday in Calhoun City.
Brandon McKenzie (3-2) took the loss Friday as Calhoun scored 11 runs in the first inning and seven in the fifth.
Alan Busby, Colten Acy and Keiyhaun Wilks had a single each for J.Z. George.
Wilks (0-4) took the loss on the mound Thursday. He walked four and struck out three. Alex Criss had a double, and McKenzie had a single for the Jags.
J.Z. George (3-6 overall) goes to Potts Camp Monday.
