Greenwood High School opened its 2022 baseball season with a 15-11 victory over visiting Leflore County Tuesday at Whittington Park.
“We have a bunch of young kids, but they are competitors,” said GHS head coach David McIntyre. “I’m encouraged by the way they battled and fought back to get this win.”
Leflore (0-1), in its first year under coach Earnest Williams, led 5-0 after two innings and 8-2 after three. The Tigers scored one run in the top of the fourth before Greenwood rallied for seven runs in its half of the fourth to tie the game at 9-9.
Leflore got a run each in the fifth and sixth frames to lead 11-9. The Bulldogs took advantage of walks, passed balls and some poor defense to plate six runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Tennill Cannon Jr. (1-0) relieved starter Davin Anderson, going the final five innings, allowing six runs and striking out 12. Anderson worked the first two frames, yielding five runs and fanning four.
Kevion Young had a single and triple, and Bradley O’Bryant had a triple for the Bulldogs. Cannon, Jordan McAtee and Cedric Shelby Jr. had a single each.
For Leflore, Nathaniel Riley had a single, double, RBI, scored two runs and stole two bases. Maurice Edwards had a single, and Dekari “Turbo” Johnson had a single, RBI, scored three runs and stole seven bases.
Leflore and Greenwood are scheduled to play again Friday in Itta Bena at 4 p.m.
- J.Z. George: Brandon McKenzie earned his second win in as many starts in leading J.Z. George to a 16-1 win over visiting McAdams High School Tuesday in North Carrollton.
McKenzie, a junior, went three innings, allowing one run on two hits, walking one and fanning five. He also stayed hot at the plate as he had a single and two doubles, scoring three runs.
Kevin Favela had three singles, and Charlie Wilson and Laike Shute collected two singles apiece. Alan Busby had a double and scored three times, and Dylan Nobles and Michael Thomas had a single each.
J.Z. George is slated to host Riverside High School Friday with the JV starting at 4 p.m. and the varsity to follow.
The Lady Jaguars fast-pitch softball team played at Riverside Tuesday, falling 19-2. Rylan Hancock took the loss in the circle as she went two innings, allowing 12 runs on two hits, walking seven and hitting six batters.
Saralyn Roberts went the next two innings, giving up seven runs on four hits, walking six, hitting four and fanning five.
Roberts had a single and triple at the plate, and Rebecca Cornish had a single and double. Tanya Robinson and Jessica Cornish had a single each.
The Lady Jags play at Columbus Friday.
